Leather Doll - Dark Blue/Brown
Leather Doll - Dark Blue/Brown
Created from a dream, literally from a dream that Dona Doye had. Dona Doye is an artist and truly one of the most creative people I have ever met. She and I created Cibado together. Although we are no longer partners I fully credit her with the design and idea behind this leather doll - creature - being. With the patterning and sewing of this doll I was able to help craft this creature to life. We made a dozen or so back in the years between 2008-2011 but decided to eventually concentrate on designing and crafting bags which we were doing as well.
Over the years I had been wanting to re-visit them - and finally I did, in the spring of 2020., amidst the unfolding pandemic. Possibly an odd time but it felt like the perfect time. As was and is the case for many, Covid -19’s impact on my life was drastic and life-altering. Basically utter chaos ensued in mid April last year when the Mister was laid off and then a few weeks later, we received notice from our landlord that he was selling our rental. We had a very short window of time to figure out a whole heck of a lot of things. It was an utterly chaotic upheaval, discombobulation and eventually displacement. We ultimately decided to leave Colorado and make a temporary move, made possible by the grace of the Mr’s family cabin sitting empty on a lake in Minnesota. We thank our lucky stars that we had this option, an option that allowed and continues to allow us to figure out our next move without drowning. My heart though has often been heavy for those suffering losses and not having the resources we had and have to build again.
As my time in my studio was coming to a close I procrastinated the packing process and warded off the sadness and frustration by resurrecting something. Something that made me smile and perhaps will make you smile as well.
Fast forward to the late fall of 2020 - still displaced living in the “temporary” home, I carved out a nook (a very small nook) for myself in order to see if I could continue to work. I knew small projects would be the best way to begin again because my work surface is very small. SO I made 3 dolls. I feel this was the right time to bring them back to life. They are meant to be silly, put a smile on your face and bring a bit of joy to your world.
This is a very long description but one I thought worthy to tell this story. Thank you for reading.
